There are two different ways in which the RC-Cornet® helps to alleviate these problems using the physical effect of vibrations:
When blowing into the RC-Cornet® in its basic setting positive expiratory pressure (PEP) with superimposed flow oscillations are produced. The PEP and vibrations travel into the lung via the airways and help to stretch the bronchi. This improveds matters for patients with asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or emhysema
Alternatively, by turning the mouthpiece, it is possible to adjust the vibrations so that on blowing into the Cornet pressure is first built up and then suddenly released. This setting is much more suitable to dislodge thick mucous from the airways and subsequent coughing up. This form of therapy is much more suited to the treatment of COPD, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis and other diseases that are caused by viscous mucous and excessive secretions.
